Budget and Planning Initiatives

Our division continues to explore ways to improve business processes and gain efficiencies in all areas we can affect change. In general, we strive to continually advance more automation with improved accuracy, remain strong in regulatory compliance, and to maximize the strengths of our highly trained employees to continually improve customer service and satisfaction.

As of Fall 2011, efficiency and automation efforts have resulted in over 65% of student refunds being processed electronically, and the electronic payment project objectives include 100% elimination of paper payments and notifications, with 100% of payments processed electronically.

We have developed comprehensive tutorials on how to transact business in Banner for employees, as well as inform them of key accounting concepts at MSU.

We have improved speed and efficiency with check processing at the cashier level eliminating the need to physically endorse checks and take them to the bank.

In the area of Procurement, we seek lower priced goods and services through improving and centralizing existing contracts and enhancing contract negotiations. We continue to analyze spending to help identify specific areas of potential savings-and we do this with sustainability in mind, working with departments on the purchase and use of "Green" chemicals. We are developing a better record of all MSU land and buildings through the creation of a geodatabase and the maximization of revenue in the selling of surplus property.

In the Travel area of we will implement an electronic Travel and Expense module with campus-wide electronic travel processing in the near future.

Current and future initiatives undertaken by the Division of Budget & Planning will improve and streamline services to our customers, protect and maintain public assets entrusted to our institution, and more effectively enable Mississippi State University to successfully deliver unparalleled programs of teaching, research, and service.
